It was the time of food trucks, outdoor movie viewings, field games, and most importantly… free concerts!
It wasn’t until the week of the festivals that I realized what was going on at my school, and shortly after, I realized that this was happening at all the universities. My friends and I decided to take full advantage of these events.
When the festivals were just starting, my friends and I decided to stay on our own campus and see what was going on. We walked around the area of the food trucks and ate some delicious fried rice cakes and sausages, street churros with ice cream, and grilled chicken teriyaki on a stick. So, I didn’t take any pictures of the food, we were just too hungry and devoured everything on sight, sorry not sorry. Just trust me when I say that the food was as good as it sounds (:
On the next day of the festival week, my friend and I decided to go to Hongik University because we had heard that Red Velvet was performing that day. She loves the group and I was down to go for the experience. Once we got there, we were on a mission to find a good spot to watch the performers. We saw an extremely long line and we figured it was the line to get into the floor area for the concert. We got in line and waited for about 20 minutes, stressing out because we weren’t 100% sure what the line was actually for. After a while, we heard two different requirements to get on the floor. 1. That you had to be wearing Nike to get in and 2. You had to be a Hongik University student to get in. Pretty sure the latter was true, even if the former probably wasn’t. After we left the line, we were on a mission to find a good spot. An important thing to note is that a lot of campuses here are on hilly areas. There are so many hills you don’t even need to do leg day if you walk around your campus every day. Anyways, we ended up going to the top hill of the campus and one of my friends found a spot behind a billboard at the edge of the hill. Behind the billboard, there were a lot of dead trees, but we were able to move some twigs, leaves, and branches to create a little cocoon for us. The spot would’ve been perfect, but there was one thick tree on the hill below ours that was in the center of our stage view. On the bright side, we had a view of the TVs showing what was happening on-stage. From our little cocoon we were able to see some cover artists, dancers, Red Velvet, and Beenzino (the highlight of my night).

We only participated in 2 days of the festival week, but it was a lot. Each campus had different famous artists and a lot of dancing groups perform. Each campus also had a variety of food trucks that were to die for. My campus had movie nights on the big lawn too. We also had a lot of little activities throughout the campus held by different clubs. Overall, it was a fun week and it made me come to the conclusion that U.S. universities should take notes from these festivals, I would definitely want to go to more university festivals like the ones here.
